Gold is priced by weight, and that changes how you should buy it
Almost every other product a retailer buys has a stable list price. Gold does not. The metal is priced against a market rate that moves daily, and the piece is priced against how much of that metal it contains. Two rings that look identical in a photograph can differ substantially in cost because one is hollow and one is solid, or because one is 18K and one is 10K.
This matters commercially because it is where buyers get caught. A quote that looks cheap usually means less metal, and less metal usually means a thinner piece that wears through or bends. When we quote, we tell you the metal weight, so you are comparing like with like rather than comparing headline numbers.
Karat options and what they mean for your margin

Colour options
Yellow gold
The traditional choice, and the one that reads most clearly as gold in product photography.
White gold
Alloyed and typically rhodium plated for a bright white finish. The plating is renewable, and your customer should be told that.
Rose gold
Copper-alloyed for a warm tone. Tone varies with alloy ratio, so we match it to a sample if you are extending an existing range.
Solid gold or gold plating — say which you are selling
Gold plated and gold vermeil pieces have a legitimate place in a range, and we manufacture them. What matters is that the distinction is stated accurately to the customer, because it is both a legal requirement in the US and the fastest way to lose a customer permanently if you get it wrong.
Solid gold is gold throughout and stamped for its karat. Plated pieces are a base metal, usually 925 sterling silver in our work, with a gold layer applied. We stamp and describe every piece for what it actually is, and we will not describe a plated piece as gold on your invoice or your product data.
Hallmarking and stamping
Every solid gold piece is stamped with its karat mark. For private-label production, your own maker’s mark is applied alongside the quality stamp. US law requires that a quality mark be accompanied by a responsible party’s mark, so if you are selling under your own brand this is not optional detail — it is part of selling compliantly.

Quality control on gold work
We check metal weight against the agreed specification, which is the single most important check on a gold piece and the one most often skipped. Alongside that: karat stamping accuracy, stone security across settings, solder joint integrity on chains and clasps, plating evenness on rhodium-finished white gold, and finish quality including the gallery and underside.

Do you manufacture in 10K, 14K and 18K gold?
Yes, all three, in yellow, white and rose.
Why can’t you give me a fixed price list?
Because gold is priced against a market rate that moves daily and the piece is priced by weight. A fixed list would be wrong within a week. We quote against your specification and hold the quote for a stated period.
Which karat should I stock for the US market?
14K is the American default for bridal and fine jewelry. 10K opens a lower price point and suits chains. 18K suits statement and higher-value pieces. Most retailers carry two of the three.
Are pieces hallmarked?
Solid gold pieces are stamped with their karat mark, and private-label pieces carry your maker’s mark alongside it.
Do you make hollow or solid chains?
Both, and we will tell you which a quote is for. Hollow chains cost less and weigh less; solid chains cost more and last longer. Neither is wrong, but you should know which you are buying.
